DISEASE SURVEILLANCE & HEALTH MONITORING
Ongoing scabies surveillance in southern ibex populations and routine roe deer health sampling, with biological samples collected and submitted to wildlife authorities to support disease tracking and population health assessment.
DOCUMENTED DISEASE EVENTS (2006–PRESENT)
Recorded outbreaks include infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) linked to Mycoplasma conjunctivae, Border Disease Virus (BDV) causing population decline and immunosuppression, and Babesia infections in Swiss Alpine chamois, highlighting broader emerging disease risks.
WILDLIFE SURVEYS & DATA USE
Government-led censuses conducted over two-day survey periods are used to set hunting quotas, supported by operator-led field sampling and disease surveillance to inform wildlife management decisions.
QUOTA SYSTEM & MANAGEMENT INSIGHT
Quotas are generally representative but can be affected by seasonal wildlife movement in the Pyrenees, with noted potential for system improvement based on ecological variability.
SPECIES AVAILABLE
Beceite, Gredos, Ronda, and Southeastern ibex; chamois; wild boar; roe deer; fallow deer; Iberian mouflon sheep; red deer; and aoudad.
QUOTAS
Chamois: 20 per year across 3 areas.
Ibex quotas: 30–40 Gredos, 30–40 Pyrenean, 10–15 Ronda, and 30–40 Southeastern ibex annually.
POPULATION MANAGEMENT
Wild boar are currently overpopulated and being actively culled in response to African Swine Fever risk.
TROPHY AGE REQUIREMENTS
Age criteria for ibex, chamois, roe deer, and other key species are set by government on a per-area basis.
HUNTING SEASON
Runs from September to May under regulated seasonal access.
MANAGEMENT PHILOSOPHY
Selective population control is applied, with younger animals harvested in overpopulated species (e.g. wild boar, roe deer), while protecting younger chamois and Ronda ibex to support population recovery and growth.
