Restoring Balance Between Rural People & Grizzly Bears
In the rugged heart of western Canada, a delicate equilibrium is tipping.
The bans on grizzly bear hunting in British Columbia and Alberta were intended to safeguard these majestic creatures. But they’ve had unintended consequences—grizzly populations are surging in some regions, threatening food security, public safety, and rural livelihoods. Grizzlies are being killed at record pace with zero respect for sustainable use. The people most affected—First Nations, outfitters, ranchers, rural residents, local hunters—have been left unheard.
Project Grizzly Balance exists to restore ecological and social balance by promoting respectful and sustainable management of grizzly bears—guided by knowledge, lived experience, and community collaboration.
Why This Matters
Rural realities are being ignored: Hunting bans are reshaping life in communities with little input from those living closest to grizzlies.
Urban perceptions drive policy: Most citizens don’t see the impact these bans have on conservation, safety, and culture.
Sustainable hunting can be conservation: When responsibly managed, it protects both grizzlies and people. People are a vital part of grizzly bear management, and we intend to inject basic human rights back into grizzly bear management.
Our Mission
To promote balanced grizzly bear management by amplifying the voices of Indigenous people, hunters, ranchers, and rural communities.
