Wire snares, simple and cheap traps made from wire, rope, and branches, are a major threat to African wildlife. They are used extensively by poachers and indiscriminately capture various animals. This poaching decimates target species for bushmeat, impacting ecosystems and biodiversity, and also results in the harmful bycatch of non-target species like elephants and lions. To combat this, a multifaceted conservation strategy is necessary, including anti-poaching patrols, community involvement, public education, technological tools, and stricter legal measures. These efforts are crucial to protect Africa’s wildlife.
